Presentation to First Year Students
Overview
Although our online class won’t allow for an oral presentation, we can explore some of the common elements of a presentation through the following project: the Presentation to Binghamton University First Years. In this case, you will take the presentation through several steps, until you end up with a scripted PowerPoint. You'll correspond with the chair, arrange for the equipment you need, prepare progress and follow up reports, and design and script the presentation, which you'll submit.
Case
Don Loewen, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education has asked department chairs to schedule information sessions for students in their first year to provide them with more information about majors. You’re chosen by the chair of your major at Binghamton University to create a 10 minute power point presentation that introduces first year students to the major. You will be on a panel that includes four to six representatives of different departments, so it is important that your presentation is memorable and fits within the ten minute time frame. - calls or emails to the department;
- calls to the admissions office or the Career Development Center;
- information published by BU, including admissions and departmental websites, or the catalog;
- online research which explores what graduates in your major choose to do.
Deliverables
Proposal in the form of a memo: 2 pages
Compose a memo to the department chair which describes how you will approach the presentation. The chair will want to know what information you intend to provide students, your overall approach to the presentation, and how you intend to answer the three goals. Describe what research you intend to do and what resources you will rely on. The chair would like, attached to the memo, a preliminary outline of the presentation. Please use bold faced headings to separate sections. Email to Ms. Erin Slade, Assistant to Vice Provost Loewen Ms. Erin Slade, Coordinator of Major Events for Vice Provost Loewen emailed you to request a bio for the publicity. She also wants to know if you require any technology—that is, if you intend to offer a power point presentation. In your reply, you should tell her that you intend to distribute a handout and ask how many copies you should bring. Your bio will be attached to this email. Although you will be submitting this to me addressed to her via Turnitin, be sure to indicate in your email that you bio is attached. Professional Bio You will be included in publicity for the presentation. Please submit a 75 to 100 word biographical entry for the program. Remember the purpose of the presentation, the audience, and the importance of your ethos. The bio should be written in the third person. |
Slides and full script for a ten minute power point presentation
Creat e a PowerPoint presentation for the audience described in the overview to accomplish the goals described by the chair. Your chair wants you to script the presentation.
